Criticism of Colombian President Gustavo Petro arose after a publication in which he responded with the expression ‘Heil Hitler’ to content spread on social networks, which unleashed a strong political and digital controversy.
The event occurred when the president reacted to a publication published by the newspaper ‘El Espectador’ on social networks.
In his response, Petro used the phrase ‘Heil Hitler’, expression historically associated with the greeting of the Nazi regime in Adolf Hitler’s Germany, which immediately generated reactions of rejection.

The publication was interpreted by several observers as an inappropriate expression, due to the historical burden associated to the reference used by the head of state.
Given the controversy, statements began to emerge both nationally and internationally questioning the tone of the Colombian president’s message.

One of the first to react from the outside was the American Congressman Carlos A. Giménez, who spoke through the social network X.
The legislator described the expression used by Petro as “totally disgusting to use that phrase”, adding to the criticism that had already been spread in different digital spaces.

His statements quickly went viral and expanded the scope of the debate to political scenarios outside of Colombia.
For its part, President Gustavo Petro has denied on previous occasions any intention of advocating extreme ideologiesamidst controversies related to his language on social networks.
The episode reopens the discussion about the use of language in the digital political sphere, as well as the impact of the leaders’ expressions on public perception.
