Tajikistan called on the international community to increase climate finance and simplify access to financial resources for vulnerable countries. This was stated by the Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Protection Bakhodur Sheralizoda at the 8th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility in Samarkand, the press service reported Committee.
He noted that in the context of climate change, developing and vulnerable countries need more effective support from international partners.
According to the Committee Chair, in preparation for GEF-9, such support should be more focused on climate change adaptation, mountain ecosystem conservation, land restoration, sustainable waste management, and integrated water, climate and nature solutions.
The speech also noted the global initiatives of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon in the field of water resources, climate, glacier conservation and biodiversity.
In particular, the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution declaring March 21 as World Glacier Day and the resolution on International Markhor Day were called important achievements of Tajikistan’s environmental policy.
In addition, Sheralizoda presented the country’s national priorities in the environmental sphere. Among them are the development of green energy, the implementation of the Country Greening Program until 2040, and the protection of mountain ecosystems, glaciers and biodiversity.
On the sidelines of the GEF Assembly, Bahodur Sheralizoda also held bilateral meetings with representatives of international organizations and government agencies.
The parties discussed cooperation in the field of environmental and climate protection, attracting technical and financial support, combating plastic pollution, hazardous waste management, biodiversity conservation and the implementation of joint environmental projects.
They also discussed promoting Tajikistan’s initiatives to preserve glaciers and the climate agenda.
The Committee noted that new partnerships and attraction of resources will help implement the country’s environmental and climate priorities, as well as promote the “green” agenda at the international level.
