WASHINGTON – A meteor exploded off the coast of Massachusetts in the USA and caused a strong bang that could be heard throughout the country, and NASA announced that the energy released during its disintegration was equal to the explosion of about 300 tons of TNT.
According to preliminary reports submitted to the American Meteorological Society, dozens of people across the Northeast reported seeing the fireball from Boston to Ispwich and Johnston on Long Island, according to media reports.
“It seems that the meteor disintegrated at a height of 64 kilometers above northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire. The energy released during the disintegration is estimated to be the equivalent of about 300 tons of TNT, which explains the strong explosion,” according to a statement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, reports Srna.
In March, a meteor exploded over Ohio, and just days later, another was reported over Texas that created a powerful shock wave and scattered meteorites across the Houston area, including one fragment that reportedly pierced the roof of a house.
Scientists of the American Meteorological Society also noted an unusual increase in the number of large fireballs and sonic booms during the first months of 2026.
