“Hraparak” talked to a linguist, head of the television journalism department of the Pedagogical University Levon Galstyan with
– What should be the culture of political speech? In civilized countries, cursing, insulting, sending messages using street language, talking about each other’s underwear, entering each other’s private lives can be considered acceptable and normal phenomena, or are these categorically unacceptable phenomena?
– First of all, I want to start our conversation by referring to the requirements of the “Language” law. There is such a requirement that the citizens of the Republic of Armenia are obliged to preserve the integrity of the language. It is a legal requirement that is very clearly formulated. Especially in public speaking, when the speech is addressed to the crowd, everyone is obliged to speak correctly. By the way, that is the responsibility of the guest or guests, not the journalist. The guest is an official speaker. People often confuse the word “official” and associate it only with officials, but this is not the case. Anyone who speaks for the public, regardless of their profession; Whether he is a deputy or just a citizen, he is obliged to follow his word, observing the language rules. It is uncomfortable to even discuss vulgarities and swearing on the air. Cursing and insults should be excluded from the air.
– Have you followed the famous H1 debates and what is your opinion about them?
– I watched a few episodes, my opinion is negative. I formed a very bad opinion. Our people have a special attitude and respect for polite speech. Those who think they can win people’s sympathy with street idioms are sorely mistaken. The exact opposite happens. They think that they can appear direct with language permissiveness, but it is disrespectful. A person can be a dialect speaker and find it difficult to speak in literary Armenian, which is a completely normal phenomenon, but speaking in front of the public with curses and vulgar language is not allowed.
