The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on Sunday that China and the European Union are discussing establishing a consultation mechanism on trade and investment, and will hold a related dialogue in this regard.
In response to a media inquiry regarding the guiding discussion held by the European Commission’s Body of Commissioners on relations between the European Union and China, a ministry spokesman said that China has maintained smooth communication with the European Union, according to the Omani agency.
The spokesman added that China and the European Union have an important partnership in the fields of economy and trade based on equality and mutual benefit, expressing China’s hope that the European side will adhere to the rules of the World Trade Organization, adhere to free trade and fair competition, and firmly oppose protectionism and unilateralism.
The spokesman noted that China hopes that the European Union will work with it to implement the consensus reached by leaders of both sides, address differences through dialogue and consultation, and promote economic and trade development between China and the European Union.
The spokesman stressed that if the European side insists on unilaterally introducing new trade tools and imposing discriminatory restrictions, China will respond and take effective measures to protect its own interests.
