Nuth Sambath, a health science expert at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, has urged people nationwide to avoid drinking rice wine and other alcoholic beverages during and after the Khmer New Year, warning of their harmful effects on health.
Sambath said that, instead of consuming alcohol when gathering with relatives and friends, people should consider drinking coconut water, which is not only healthier but also helps support the local economy and promote domestic products.
He noted that the extreme heat this year could further worsen the health impacts of alcohol consumption, particularly during social gatherings.
Regarding the production of rice wine, Sambath warned that improper distillation or the incorrect use of methanol can lead to serious health risks. He added that relevant ministries and institutions must take responsibility if cases of poisoning occur at the local level.
He added that excessive alcohol consumption can damage vital organs, including the liver, heart, brain and stomach, and may lead to serious illnesses or even death. For better health, he encouraged people to reduce or avoid alcohol and adopt healthier habits.
The Ministry of Health has also recently warned the public to avoid consuming rice wine of unknown origin or products containing methanol, which can cause poisoning and even death, particularly during the festive period.
