85% of Al Mughsail Road & Bridge completed, traffic to open in July

This will improve traffic flow, enhance access to key tourist destinations, and strengthen logistical connectivity in Dhofar Governorate.

Eng. Khamis Mohammed Al Shammakhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Transport, stated that Al Mughsail Road and Bridge project is among the vital initiatives to which the Ministry has devoted special attention, given its qualitative contribution to the governorate’s road network.

He affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the project integrates engineering and aesthetic elements in harmony with surrounding tourist landmarks, foremost among them Marneef Cave and the natural fountains of Al Mughsail Beach.

He explained that the project includes a concrete bridge approximately 500 metres long, supported by 20 pillars and two side abutments rising 12 meters high.

It also features aesthetic elements and an underground tunnel to facilitate traffic movement and access to nearby tourist sites, including Al Mughsail waterfront, Marneef Cave, and the natural fountains.

He added that the project includes roadside parking areas and a lighted walkway ranging from 2 to 7 metres in width, along with equipping the road with all traffic safety requirements—including concrete and metal barriers, directional signs, and warning markings—in accordance with the standard specifications of the Sultanate of Oman’s Road Design Manual.

Eng. Khamis explained that a number of ongoing projects in Dhofar Governorate and across other governorates of the Sultanate of Oman have begun implementing innovative technologies, reflecting national directions in environmental sustainability, green mobility, and digital transformation.

He noted that these projects include modern solutions such as asphalt recycling to reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact of road works, as well as the use of solar panels in various project facilities to lower the carbon footprint and reduce operational costs.

He added that the Ministry is currently working to expand the use of remote-control equipment in road paving operations, most notably smart asphalt paving technology being applied in the dualisation project of Sultan Said bin Taimour Road (Part Four) in Dhofar Governorate.

Additionally, advanced techniques are being employed to control dust from construction activities, improving execution efficiency, protecting the environment, and enhancing safety levels at work sites.

He noted that the adoption of these modern technologies reflects the Ministry’s commitment to developing the transport and roads sector in line with global best practices, aligning with sustainable development goals and improving the quality of projects implemented across the Sultanate of Oman.
