People who face problems of weight may soon have a new option of treatment also available in Europe. The European Union is preparing to allow the use of the first variant in the form of a tablet for obesity control, after a favorable opinion from European specialists.
The new therapeutic solution is aimed at adults diagnosed with obesitybut also to those who have extra pounds and at the same time face other medical problems associated with body weight.
The drug, sold under the name Wegovy, would offer an alternative to the injectable treatments used so far in this category. Wegovy also exists in injectable form, and the marketing authorization for this variant will also be extended to capsules, reports the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
EMA experts analyzed the product and expressed their agreement for its introduction on the European market, with the official procedure to be completed in the next period.
The medicine will be issued on the basis of a medical prescription
The treatment will not be able to be purchased without a medical recommendation. Patients will need consultations and assessments before receiving the prescription.
But the doctors point out that such therapies it does not eliminate the importance of a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet and physical activity remain important factors in long-term weight control.
The product is already available in the United States, where it previously received approval, and the authorities in Romania announced that the medicine would also reach the local market.
