A refurbished chateau in south-west France could be yours for a mere €440,000 (plus upkeep costs, of course).
A British family has put the château de Vilhonneur, in Charente, up for sale. On a 1.3-hectare estate, it combines medieval heritage with modern comforts, and is on the market for €440,000.
Parts of the refurbished listed historic monument in Moulins-sur-Tardoire date as far back as the 12th century, while the main square keep – which has been renovated and converted into a ‘holiday home’, according to the literature, was built in the 15th century.

The keep has four storeys and comprises three large bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a fitted kitchen, a dining room and a living room on the ground floor. The property offers approximately 250m² of living space.
The estate agent also highlights “the rustic medieval character” of the large stone fireplaces, high ceilings and spiral staircases of stone and wood. It also has a drawbridge and a watchtower, while the third-floor master bedroom features a small balcony once used for defence – it was a place where soldiers could hurl projectiles at any attackers from a place of relative safety, known as a machicolation.

Meanwhile, the property also two barns, one measuring 200m² and the second 100m². All the roofs in the property were replaced a decade ago.
The property belongs to a British family who now live in Hong Kong, and have entrusted the upkeep of the grounds to local residents.
The sale is being handled by Leggett Immobilier, which specialises in dealing with overseas buyers. Full details of the property here
