BROKOPONDO — Gold company Zijin regrets the deadly incident that occurred on Sunday in the Rosebel mine in Brokopondo, in which two illegal gold miners were killed. The men had entered the mining area and, according to preliminary information, fell from a great height.
One of the victims – according to the police, 27-year-old RK – died on the spot. The other man (SD), who was seriously injured and taken to Paramaribo, succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. reports the Suriname Police Force Monday on its website.

Jerry Finisie, community relations and development manager at Zijin, counters the True Time that the company received a report of the incident that resulted in injuries around five o’clock on Sunday morning. Company employees provided first aid, after which the seriously injured victim was transported to Paramaribo by ambulance. Upon arrival it turned out that the other victim had already died.
According to Finisie, the company did not carry out any blasting work on Sunday. The latter so-called blast in the mine took place on April 28. He emphasizes that the working methods of illegal gold diggers are particularly risky. They wear no protective clothing or footwear and navigate difficult mountain slopes, with all the dangers that entails. The weather conditions also play a role. “The men are not experienced climbers and the rain also makes the terrain very slippery,” says Finisie.
The Zijin official states that the mine encroachment must stop. “Not only do the pork thugs endanger themselves, but they also create unsafe situations for our employees.” The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is still ongoing. A similar incident occurred in January this year.
