Global streaming star Darren Watkins Jr., best known as IShowSpeed, drew thousands onto the streets of Barbados on Monday while millions watched online, as the YouTuber’s high-energy livestream turned a whirlwind island tour into a global cultural showcase.
The American content creator, known for his high-energy livestreams on YouTube, followed a packed schedule designed to give him a full Barbadian experience, moving from school visits to beaches, food spots and historic sites within hours.
Crowds of schoolchildren, parents and supporters gathered at multiple locations, including Christ Church Foundation School, Oistins, Dover Beach, Golden Square Freedom Park and Heroes Square, with many following his movements throughout the day.
His itinerary included a school visit, a walk-through of the Oistins fishing area and jetty, playing dominoes, interacting with vendors, riding a Bajan bus while learning local slang, visiting local fast-food chain Chefette, stopping at Garrison Savannah and Savvy on the Bay, and ending with a cultural segment with the Barbados Landship Association, sticklicking, a mock Crop Over jump and a visit to Rihanna Drive.
President of the Barbados Youth Development Council Caleb Brathwaite said the livestream captured the island’s culture and energy in real time.
“I was locked into the stream from the very beginning when he would have gotten on the bus with the school children and he asked the school children, ‘you don’t have school?’ And they were like, ‘no’; up until the very end when he would have received that green apple (how IShowSpeed signals the end of a livestream) from Rihanna at her childhood home,” Brathwaite said.
“I was locked in and really and truly in a couple of hours, speed has been able to showcase Barbadian culture and the beauty that we have right here at home to millions of people.”
He noted that the livestream had already attracted significant global attention.
“Right now the live stream stands at 2.6 million views and counting,” he said, adding that the influencer’s reach extends to tens of millions across social media platforms.
The exposure presents a major opportunity for Barbados, Brathwaite said.
“He carries that international exposure that is good for Barbados and to showcase to the world that we are one of the best in the world.”
He also pointed to the social impact of the event, particularly among young people.
“It was good too to see young people having fun, having a grand time and young people were being young people and children were being children,” he said.
“In today’s society, even in recent times where there were a lot of negatives being showcased in the media among a portion of our population, it’s good to see young people having a good time, having fun.”
The visit formed part of IShowSpeed’s wider Caribbean tour, which has already taken him to Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada, where he sampled regional culture, cuisine and entertainment while collaborating with local personalities.
The scale of engagement in Barbados reflected a shared sense of national pride, said Brathwaite.
“I would even go as far to say that speed brought the country together because everyone was watching the stream, everyone was talking about it. Your mummy, your daddy, your auntie, your uncle, your granny, everybody was talking about the stream,” he said.
“It really goes to show the level of pride that we have in our country and that the motto of pride and industry beats within all of our hearts.”
