The match between Argentina and Austria is one of the most attractive fixtures of the second round in Group J. Both countries started their World Cup campaign with a victory and can almost certainly secure a place in the knockout phase with another victory.
The reigning world champion impressed in the opening match against Algeria. Led by star player Lionel Messi, the team won convincingly 3-0. Messi was responsible for all three goals and is also on the verge of making history as the all-time top scorer at the World Cup finals.
National coach Lionel Scaloni seems to make only one change in his starting eleven. Defender Nahuel Molina replaces Gonzalo Montiel on the right side of the defense.
Austria returned to the World Cup after a 28-year absence and started with a solid 3-1 win over Jordan. The team of national coach Ralf Rangnick is known for its aggressiveness pressingphysical play and excellent organization.
With experienced players such as David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer and striker Michael Gregoritsch, Austria has enough quality to make it difficult for any opponent. Rangnick makes three changes compared to the match with Jordan.
The biggest question of this match is whether Austria will succeed in putting pressure on Messi and the Argentine midfield. Rangnick’s teams usually try to force ball losses high on the field, but against a technically strong team like Argentina, this can also create space behind the defense. Argentina also has attackers such as Lautaro Martínez and Thiago Almada, who can take advantage of those spaces.
Austria has the organization and discipline to make things difficult for Argentina, but the individual quality of the South Americans remains considerably greater. If Messi makes his mark on the match again, a second victory for the defending champions is obvious.
