The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Murad Ajal, supervised the launch of the project to complete a power generation station in the municipality of Al-Aouinat in the state of Tebessa, which is the second largest facility of this type at the national level with a production capacity of 1,406,017 megawatts, in a step aimed at strengthening the national electrical system and meeting the growing demand for energy..
It is expected that this strategic station, which extends over an area of 40 hectares in the “Arqoub Al-Asfar” area, will contribute to creating a qualitative shift in the energy sector, by supporting the security of electrical supply and keeping pace with the developmental dynamism witnessed by the country, in addition to improving the energy infrastructure at the national level.
The Minister, during his supervision of the launch of the project, accompanied by the Governor of Tebessa, Ahmed Belhaddad, explained that the station will rely on the latest international technologies, ensuring increased energy efficiency and reducing fuel consumption, pointing to its role in enhancing electrical supply for the benefit of the state and many regions of the country.
This facility will be operated with combined cycle technology based on natural gas and steam, which is an advanced technology that combines gas turbines and steam turbines to generate additional energy from the same fuel, allowing about 30 percent of natural gas or diesel consumption to be saved.
The Minister stressed that this vital project, which will contribute to supporting the national energy balance, also opens future horizons for the export of electricity, given the border location of the state of Tebessa, while ensuring that it is managed by Algerian competencies.
According to the project’s technical card, a financial envelope estimated at 184.09 billion dinars has been allocated for it, and it will be completed by the Sonelgaz Electricity Production Complex, in coordination with the Chinese National Electrical Engineering Company KNEC, within a period extending to 48 months.
The project will also provide 1,500 jobs during the completion phase and 500 jobs during the exploitation phase, in addition to enhancing training and transfer of knowledge in the energy field.
In a related context, the Minister of Energy indicated that the state of Tebessa has achieved an electricity coverage rate of approximately 99 percent, while the gas coverage rate exceeds 77 percent, with new projects scheduled during the year 2026 to raise it to 80 percent, in addition to solar energy projects directed at homes far from the networks.
