The year 1966 was special. Any supporter of the English national football team will say this, because at that time they won their only title as the best in the world. And the said year was also special for a global audience – not only for those in favor of the English select line, but also for the youngest: world championship it got its official mascot, a lion, for the first time Willie. And since then, the mascot has become an important promotional factor for every World Cup.
It was by no means surprising that the king of the animal world became the mascot of the championship on the island, since three lions are in the logo of the English Football Association and thus also in the coat of arms on the chest of the national team jerseys. The front of Willie’s body was covered by a UK flag with the words World Cup on it. The proud creator of the little lion, who quickly became a resident of children’s homes in England and around the world, was Reg Hoyea writer of children’s books.
