    What is the “El Carpintero” structure accused of attacking PNC agents with bullets in Izabal?


    The night of last Saturday, June 13, a confrontation took place between heavily armed individuals and agents of the National Civil Police. (PNC) in the sector known as La Corrugadora, La Democracia neighborhood, in Morales, Izabal.

    The incident was recorded by a security camera at 10 p.m., and the video was quickly spread on social networks.. In the images it can be seen that the PNC agents try to subdue several subjects who were traveling in a sedan-type vehicle.

    The video shows that the driver of the vehicle was wearing a bulletproof vest. and, according to PNC reports, the other individuals who were traveling in the same car were also carrying this type of vests and heavy-caliber weapons.

    The first investigations by the security forces indicate that the subjects who attacked the PNC agents They belong to the criminal structure identified as “el Carpintero.”

    The PNC agents were attacked with bullets while trying to subdue several individuals who were traveling in a sedan vehicle carrying armored vests and heavy-caliber weapons. (Free Press Video: Social Networks).

    PNC investigators indicate that This criminal structure is dedicated to drug trafficking and distribution in the departments of Zacapa, Izabal, Alta Verapaz, El Progreso and Chiquimula.

    Its modus operandi consists of using convenience centers and neighborhood stores, so it would have a great capacity to carry out the distribution of narcotics.

    The PNC, with the support of the Public Ministry (MP), was already carrying out the corresponding investigations to dismantle said criminal group, was indicated. However, the security forces still do not provide data on who or who are responsible for being in charge of this criminal structure that operates in the east of the country.

    Weapons seized and arrests

    According to the information provided by the National Civil Police, five individuals who were traveling in the vehicle were captured, from whom the following were seized:

    • 3 .223 caliber rifles
    • 6 guns
    • 307 pistol ammunition
    • 12 rifle magazines
    • 10 pistol magazines
    • 4 armored vests

    Regarding the detainees, they were identified as:

    Alex “N”, 39 years old; Ismael “N”, 35; Álvaro “N”, 38; Winston “N”, 37, and Sergio “N”, 54, who were taken to court to resolve their legal situation.

    The PNC also indicated that the property from which the institution’s agents were attacked was identified, which was surrounded with the support of elements of the army and, until the moment the information was provided, the corresponding search warrant was awaited, which is managed by the Public Ministry.

    Agent Status

    During the confrontation that occurred on Saturday night, two National Civil Police officers were injured.

    The institution reported that the elements were identified as Deyvis Chavac Batreswho had a bullet wound at the level of his right eyebrow. The other element was identified as Selvin Jonathan Briones Caal, who had a gunshot wound to the abdomen, on the left side.

    Both agents receive medical attention and their health status is stable, according to information provided by the security forces.

    They carry out raids

    The National Civil Police reported that during this Sunday afternoon, a series of raids were carried out in the town, this derived from the attack that occurred on Saturday night against the institution’s agents in Morales, Izabal.

    In total, 14 raids were carried out led by investigators from the Specialized Criminal Investigation Division (DEIC), agents from the 61st precinct, special forces of the PNC and elements of the army.

    The actions are carried out in the San Antonio neighborhood in Morales, Izabal, according to the information provided by the PNC.
