This is how the luxury hotel, Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat, located in Greenland’s hottest and most internationally known tourist area, promotes itself on its website.
The company Arctic Hospitality Corporation A/S, which is owned by the autonomous airline Air Greenland, with the hotel in Ilulissat as its main activity, has for several years had difficulty making money. It appears that the accounts for 2025.
75 full-time positions
Arctic Hospitality Corporation’s main activity is hotel operation, restaurant operation and the operation of luxury lodges in Ilulissat, Eqi and the settlement of Ilimanaq.
Of course, Hotel Arctic, with an average of 75 full-time positions, is one of Greenland’s best-known hotels worldwide. Not least thanks to good conditions at the hotel and not least lodges, where it costs money for guests to spend the night, eat and have unique experiences.
Last year’s accounts of the Arctic Hospitality Corporation will not go down in history as something worth cheering for. The company is having difficulty making money.
In 2025, Arctic Hospitality Corporation thus had a very modest profit after tax of DKK 2.6 million after tax. It has been worse. The year before the profit was much lower, DKK 228,000.
Last year’s turnover in the hotel company is a trade secret, but significantly higher than the gross profit of DKK 51 million. The year before, the gross profit was almost DKK 45 million.
The hotel king’s company delivers record profits
Hotel king Helge Tang’s operating company Hotel Hans Egede A/S in Nuuk, with the hotels Hotel Hans Egede and Hotel HHE Express at the forefront, delivered a record profit after tax of DKK 39 million in 2025 with a gross profit of DKK 89 million.
So the hotel king is far better at making money than the Arctic Hospitality Corporation. The Ilulissat company’s profit after tax is not satisfactory, as part of the result is due to an extraordinary income in connection with the valuation of the reconstruction of the burned down Iglo Lodge.
This is what Arctic Hospitality Corporation’s management, led by director Morten Nielsen, writes in the 2025 annual report. The unsatisfactory profit was due, among other things, to parent company Air Greenland’s and SAS’s higher flight prices between Denmark and Ilulissat via Nuuk. This led to lower sales and turnover expected in the hotel company.
Concentration of conferences in Nuuk
In 2025, there was an increased concentration of conferences in Nuuk, specifically at the hotel king’s Hotel Hans Egede. And it went beyond Hotel Arctic’s sales of conferences.
– We had expected a profit last year of between four and five million kroner.
– In connection with the merger of Hotel Arctic and World of Greenland, we delivered everything called tourist products, from kayaking and fjord sailing to tours in Ilulissat to local tour operators.
– As a result, we lost a large turnover. It hit us in 2025, says CEO of Arctic Hospitality Corporation Morten Nielsen to Sermitsiaq in a comment on the accounts.
The financial decline for Arctic Hospitality Corporation is also due to higher flight prices between Denmark and Ilulissat – and between Nuuk and Ilulissat – due to the new airport in Nuuk.
This resulted in lower sales than expected for Arctic Hospitality Corporation.
– I dare not guess how many customers and money it has cost us. We have lost both tourists at the hotel and conference guests last year. We have experienced a significant decline in both turnover and earnings, says Morten Nielsen.
On the other hand, it has become cheaper to fly from Denmark to Nuuk.
Arctic Hospitality Corporation expects a slightly higher profit this year than in 2025. So the Ilulissat company will not be a profit machine like Tang’s hotel company.
