Harry Bevers, an MP for the right-wing liberal VVD party, has taken sick leave after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.
The 61-year-old will be replaced in parliament for the next 16 weeks by Dieke van Groningen.
Bevers first became an MP in January 2022, but was placed too far down the party list to retain his seat in the general election of 2023.
He returned to parliament the following July when several party colleagues were appointed to Dick Schoof’s cabinet. He focused on policy areas in healthcare, including hospital care, medicines and medical-ethical issues.
In a statement on the party’s website, the VVD said: “Harry and his family will need the comping time for treatment and recovery. We wish Harry and his family a great deal of strength for the coming period.”
The VVD is currently the second largest party in the chamber with 22 seats and part of Rob Jetten’s governing coalition.
