If those places are green, lively and comfortable, they naturally invite you to stay longer, move more, breathe more deeply. Therefore, for us, public spaces are not just infrastructure – they are the basis of the quality of everyday life. We are actively continuing our work – this year dozens of new and well-organized public spaces will appear in almost all districts of Vilnius,” says Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.

    Large-scale projects that transform neighborhoods

    In Naujininkai, near Tukstantmetis and Darius and Girėnos streets, the installation works of 1.2 ha of Tukstantmetis square have already started. The Vilnius development company is creating a multifunctional space here with a promenade, sports fields, and recreation areas. It also provides space for community gardens.     Two new public spaces are being formed in Žirmūnai.     In Pilaite, on the territory of 1.4 ha near St. Joseph’s Church, a classical square will be created with decorative plants, illuminated footpaths, fountains, rest areas and a preserved birch alley. The works are planned to start this year and be completed by the end of next year.

    In Šeškinė, next to the future National Stadium, it is planned to establish a 30-hectare educational space “Mamutų slėnis”. We are currently looking for a contractor who will ensure that educational trails, lookouts, recreation areas and thematic plant gardens appear in this natural area. The works are planned to start in 2026. IV quarter, to be completed in 2028. on the II side.

    Closer to home – more comfortable and lively green spaces

    Residential areas focus on everyday convenience – many areas will have children’s playgrounds, sports areas, paths, lighting, more greenery and more convenient connections.

    Vilkpėdes Square will be renovated by maintaining naturally formed paths and mature trees – new spaces for games, sports and events will appear here. The works are planned to start soon and be completed by the end of the year.

    This year in Pashilaičiai, Ugnijas Square and Chicago Alley will start to be cleaned up – zones for different activities will be more clearly separated here, an event space will be installed, parking issues will be resolved and greenery will be increased. Atypical solutions have been chosen for children’s playgrounds.

    In Karoliniškės, near Sietynos and V. Maciulevičius streets, it is planned to install a new educational and recreational space with a traffic safety training ground, an outdoor classroom, play and sports areas – the works are planned to start in the near future.

    In New Town, Naugarduko st. 47, the Vilnius development company has already started work – recreation and sports spaces will be installed here, the basketball court will be renovated and parking will be arranged. The works are planned to be completed in 2027. III quarter.

    In New Vilnius, Gerovės st. 1, it is planned to renovate the square near the cultural center – to install an amphitheater, a water feature, fix the paths and create a space for community events. It is planned to announce the tender for the contract works this year, and the work will be completed in 2027. III quarter.

    Even more public spaces are on the way – this year it is expected to complete the design work of the following public spaces: “Liepos gyopus pieva”, Lakštingala Square in Naujamiestis, public space at Perkūnkiemios St. 22, as well as Justiniškiai public space. Contracting works in all these territories will start already next year.

    Natural spaces – for relaxation and learning

    Larger natural areas will be developed in the city, which preserve the natural landscape, but create more opportunities for active and passive recreation.

    Very soon, Vilnius residents will be able to visit Jerusalem Pond Park. 3.5 km of walking paths will be built here, there will be terraces on the water, playgrounds for children and sports equipment, and there will even be a fountain in the pond. The 26 ha park itself will remain a wooded, natural haven in the city. It is planned to open the space to the public this summer.

    An educational pond park with paths, pontoon terraces, educational trails and recreation areas is planned in Salininkai. The works are planned to start in the summer-autumn of this year and be completed in 2027. II quarter.

    In Grigiškės, on the Vokė River at Afindevičius Street, the beach area will be improved and developed – there will be sports, recreation, event spaces and more convenient access to the water. The works are planned to start in the near future and be completed by 2027. end of The installation of this space is financed by the funds of the European Union.

    In Pilaite, between Karaliaučius and Varnė streets, a new park is planned with a convenient network of paths, sports and children’s play areas, community spaces and a preserved natural environment. The design works are implemented with community funds, while the contract works are partially financed by European Union funds and the Municipality. They are planned to be completed by 2027. end of

    Changes in the city center

    The representative spaces of the city will also receive updates. In the Old Town, the square near St. Anne’s Church. The project aims to give meaning to the historical significance of the place, improve pedestrian traffic and create a representative space for city residents and guests. Work will start soon and is scheduled to be completed by 2027. III quarter

    In Tymo Square, it is planned to tidy up the environment and organize the activities of the market more clearly. It is planned to install new roofs-pergolas here, supplement the area with greenery, create a children’s play area, and give meaning to the historical branch of Vilnius with a fragment of an artificial stream. Design proposals are currently being prepared, work is expected to start in 2027. on the second side.

    Eduard Balsis Square is planned to be renovated in a strategically important place connecting Žvēryna, the city center and the Neris embankment. It is planned to preserve valuable vegetation and a unique structure of hedges, while opening up hitherto little-used spaces and creating a convenient connection with the Neris River and the coast. The square will feature a circular path, an observation deck, recreation areas, a children’s playground, an amphitheater and music-themed elements. The installation of the square is expected in 2027-2028.

    The renovation of the old theater in the square near Vilnius is also planned, where the sculpture of the first president of Lithuania, A. Smetona, will later stand.

    A total of 64 public spaces are planned to be renovated or newly equipped in Vilnius in four years (2024-2027).
