Media reforms planned to align with digital development
The government is planning major reforms to strengthen media management, revise legislation governing the media, and accelerate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as the industry adapts to rapid technological changes and challenges in the digital era.
These changes were spotlighted at a media seminar held in Vientiane on Tuesday.
Head of the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee, Mr Khamphanh Pheuyavong, said the seminar was taking place amid rapid international changes in information and technology development, where the circulation of unclear information had become a growing challenge.
The seminar aimed to review both achievements and shortcomings in the media industry and seek recommendations for a forthcoming of the first national media conference.
Deputy Head of the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee, Dr Khammone Chanthachith, said the media had enjoyed success in many areas but still faced challenges in meeting political responsibilities in a period of expanding socio-economic development and advancing technology.
He said legal frameworks governing the media, particularly regulation of the Internet and online social media, required further improvement. In addition, the online publication of news, videos and photographs was sometimes slow, while responses to information considered harmful to Party and State policies were not always timely.
Dr Khammone also noted that some media products lacked in-depth political, ideological and theoretical content, while infrastructure, technology and equipment had not yet been modernised systematically.
To address these challenges, the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee will continue to implement the resolutions adopted by the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the 6th National Congress of the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee.
Priorities include enhancing knowledge related to the digital era and AI, training media personnel in digital skills, and accelerating the creation of a new media ecosystem through digital transformation.
Other goals include the expansion of multimedia production, improved public relations capabilities, and training journalists to become “all-round reporters” capable of filming, editing and writing stories using smartphones.
Meanwhile, Party Central Committee member and Deputy Head of the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee, Mr Vansy Kuamua, said a draft resolution on strengthening Party leadership and State management of the media would focus on improving cooperation with strategic, regional and international partners.
He said the government would accelerate revisions to the Law on Media and strengthen regulations governing information management and media operations to ensure legal compliance, social order, and national stability.
