A man was found dead with stab wounds inside a burning building on Lee Street in Nassau Village at 2 a.m. yesterday morning police said.
The victim was identified as trade unionist Perry Cox, 63.
Police said firefighters were alerted to a fire at a lime green and white single-story stone duplex.
“While attempting to contain the blaze, officers forced entry into the affected apartment and discovered an unresponsive male lying near the front door,” police said.
“The victim was removed from the residence, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel were summoned to the scene. After examination, EMS personnel confirmed that the male showed no signs of life. The fire was quickly extinguished; however, the structure sustained extensive fire damage. Further examination by EMS personnel revealed apparent stab wounds on the deceased’s body. As a result, foul play is suspected.”
Speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday, Nassau Village MP Jamahl Strachan described Cox’s death as a heinous act.
“I want to extend my sincerest condolences to his family and encourage Bahamians to embrace peaceful conflict resolution and exercise patience,” Strachan said.
“We have lost not only a community builder but also a strong advocate in the constituency, a father, and an uncle. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and my constituency, as we have truly lost a pillar.”
Cox served as the 2nd Vice President and a prominent executive council member for the Bahamas Hotel, Catering and Allied Workers Union (BHCAWU).
