By April, 260 reports
Conservationists recorded 260 reports of brown bears in Slovakia from the beginning of the year to the end of April. The response teams of national parks register 158 reports and the response teams of the State Nature Protection (ŠOP) of the Slovak Republic register 102 reports. ŠOP informed about this on its website pozermedved.sk.
Mountain and foothill areas dominate the scope of national park response teams, says ŠOP. In the High Tatras and surroundings, people reported the occurrence of a bear 93 times, in the Liptovský Mikuláš district 81 times, and in Mala and Veľká Fatra 31 times. Conservationists register 17 reports from the Nízke Tatry National Park, 13 from the Banská Bystrica district, and ten reports from the Poprad district. Notifications of occurrence are also from the districts of Žilina (nine), Dolný Kubín (seven) and Ružomberok (six).
Significant numbers of reports were also recorded in the areas of Polonín, specifically from the district of Snina, Muránska planina and Slovenský karst.
Within the scope of the intervention teams of ŠOP SR, the West and the Center registered 44 reports and the East had 14 reports. The notifications were from the districts of Prievidza, Trenčín, Banská Bystrica, Zvolen, Žiar nad Hronom, Košice-okolie, Spišská Nová Ves and Snina.
“Due to the ongoing period of increased brown bear activity (especially in connection with the rut), we recommend increased caution when moving in nature, especially in areas with more frequent occurrence of reports,” the conservationists said.
