The overflow of Zarumilla River caused flooding in the district of Green Watersprovince of Zarumillaregion Tumbesduring this Monday, November 2, in the midst of the intense rains that affect the north of the country.
According to images broadcast by Canal N, Puerto Perú, located behind Villa Perú, and the Tomás Arizola expansion are the two sectors that register the greatest effects due to the entry of water.
The emergency occurred due to the increase in the flow of the Zarumilla River, which keeps the populations settled near its channel at risk, especially in areas previously identified as vulnerable to flooding.
In the border district of Aguas Verdes, the water of the Zarumilla River reached the sectors of Port Peru and Tomás Arizola expansionindicated in journalistic reports as the points with the greatest impact.
The situation generates concern among residents, because both locations had already been identified as areas exposed to possible overflows of the tributary.
In October, the Ombudsman’s Office warned that nearly 200 families from Puerto Perú and Tomás Arizola They were at risk due to the increase in the flow of the Zarumilla River.
This background once again highlights the vulnerability of the populations settled near the banks, especially during periods of intense rainfall.
The overflow of the Zarumilla River occurs while the rTumbes region faces the consequences of heavy rainfall registered since the weekend.
Added to this situation is the significant increase in the flow of the Tumbes River, which on Monday morning exceeded the red alert threshold, according to the information provided.
This scenario keeps the populations located near its banks under surveillance, given the risk of new flooding due to the rains.
Given the effects caused by the precipitationmilitary personnel were deployed in different parts of the city of Tumbes to support the evacuation work of the accumulated water.
The works include the use of motor pumps to remove water from the affected areas and contribute to reducing the impacts of the floods.
These actions are added to the assistance and evacuation work carried out in the sectors affected by the increase in flows.
It should be noted that, to date, no updated official balance has been released on the number of flooded homes, affected families or people evacuated specifically in Port Peru and the Tomás Arizola expansion.
However, the warning issued by the Ombudsman’s Office in October allows us to estimate the number of people potentially exposed: around 200 families from both sectors.
