Investigators probing a double homicide in Penal on Sunday night are seeking to determine how Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS)-issued ammunition ended up at the crime scene after officers recovered both spent and live rounds bearing police markings.
The discovery was made after gunmen opened fire at a house along Rock Road, Penal, killing two men and wounding a third.
Dead are 23-year-old Jahrael Akeel Tafari Hunte of Ramesar Reyes Trace, Syne Village, Penal, and 45-year-old Randolph Felix of Rock Road, Penal.
A third man, survived the attack and remains under medical care.
Police officers were on duty around 8 p.m. when they received reports of explosions in the area.
When officers arrived at the scene, they met a resident who reported that he had been watching football on a computer in the company of the victims shortly before the shooting.
According to the report, Hunte had mentioned that his wife was calling him and stepped away. Moments later, the resident went outside and allegedly saw three armed men near the gate.
He then heard a series of gunshots and ran for safety.
After the shooting, he returned and found Hunte and Felix lying motionless with multiple gunshot wounds. The third man had a gunshot wound to his left lower leg, along with abrasions to his chest and wrist.
Crime Scene Investigators attached to the Region Three Homicide Bureau processed the scene and recovered 21 spent shell casings, four metal fragments and three live rounds of ammunition.
Among the items recovered were one spent 9mm shell casing and one live 9mm round bearing TTPS markings, indicating they were police-issued ammunition.
The remaining ammunition recovered carried markings from several manufacturers.
The murders occurred during a violent 13-hour period in which six people were killed across south Trinidad, including three men shot dead in Corinth, Ste Madeleine, earlier that morning.
