STS Digital will let some clients use USDM1, a digital bond issued by the Marshall Islands, as security when they trade with the company or borrow money through certain financial arrangements.
In practical terms, clients can put up USDM1 instead of cash or other assets to cover potential losses on trades, particularly derivatives. The Bermudian-regulated digital-asset trading firm can also use the bond in financing deals of its own.
USDM1 is a United States dollar sovereign bond issued on-chain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands and backed by the US Treasury. M1X Global, which supports the infrastructure behind the bond, said the structure gives institutions access to blockchain-based collateral with the legal protections they need.
Maxime Seiler, chief executive of STS Digital, said accepting this kind of collateral was central to pricing, funding and expanding the derivatives book.
“Accepting USDM1 from eligible counterparties, pledging it across our own trading and financing relationships and utilising it in structured products supports more efficient inventory financing, tighter client pricing and greater trading capacity per dollar of balance sheet,” he said.
The announcement means Bermuda has another link in the institutional digital-assets market. STS Digital holds a full Digital Asset Business Act licence from the Bermuda Monetary Authority.
Jordan Goldman, president and chief operating officer of M1X Global, said the arrangement connected on-chain markets with the collateral, legal and risk-management structures, with the potential for round-the-clock settlement.
