The Ministry of Agriculture has called on tourists not to remove coral from Cambodian waters, as it affects the conservation of marine biodiversity.
Im Rachana, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in charge of fisheries conservation, urged tourists to preserve and support the protection of marine life, to preserve this rare natural resource for future generations.
The appeal was made after local authorities of Koh Sdach commune, Kiri Sakor district, Koh Kong province, discovered that some tourists had taken coral as souvenirs.
Coral reefs are vital habitats for thousands of marine life species and provide many benefits to the marine ecosystems.
They help protect the biodiversity of thousands of underwater species, support local economies, especially ecotourism and marine fishing communities in Cambodia.
