A post appeared on Reddit by a tourist who complained about the prices in Croatia and said that he does not plan to return after this trip.
According to him, he visited Croatia after several weeks spent in Italy, Greece, France and Spain, but the impression he left was not at all positive.
“The prices of food, drinks and accommodation are incredible. Really excessive. And that for food that was good, but would easily take fifth place behind the other four countries.”
We paid twice as much for a plate of pasta as in Italy, and it wasn’t nearly as good. Cocktail prices are insane and often exceed 17 euros. A glass of house red wine with dinner? Nine and sometimes ten euros for a small glass.
I just don’t understand. Croatia is a beautiful country, but its biggest assets are neither the food nor the beaches, because other European countries have much better both. The people are really wonderful. It seems to me that they have had enough of everything. One person even told us that the Minister of Tourism criticized restaurateurs and hoteliers for exaggerating their prices.
But Croatia – the prices in Split or Korčula make Florence look good, and Dubrovnik would put even Zurich to shame,” the tourist wrote.
Not everyone agrees
When talking about prices in Croatia, you can often hear the opinion that the country is a really expensive destination. However, this discussion went in a slightly different direction. Although the post has collected more than 1,500 upvotes, many users in the comments tried to explain why the prices are so high.
“Croatia has one of the highest inflation rates in Europe, and perhaps the highest among countries with developed tourism. The introduction of the euro further worsened the inflation problem,” one user wrote.
Another replied: “That’s no excuse. Prices that are higher than in Switzerland cannot be explained by inflation alone.”
“It’s Game of Thrones’ fault,” joked one user, alluding to the popular series that was filmed in Dubrovnik.
On the other hand, there were those who believe that Croatia is not too expensive at all, but that some tourists visit places that are exclusively aimed at foreign guests, and that is why the prices are higher.
“I was in Croatia this spring and it sounds to me like you ended up at tourist sites,” wrote one user.
“It seems that way to me too. It’s not the cheapest country we’ve visited, but we were there in April and everything was quite affordable,” added another.
“I came back yesterday and I was surprised that the prices were not as high as I expected. I put off my trip to Croatia because I thought it was too expensive, and in the end I fell in love with the country,” concluded another tourist.
