Three dead in new US attack on suspected drug boat
The U.S. military on Sunday attacked another vessel suspected of transporting drugs in an operation in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing three men, the U.S. Southern Command (Southcom) said.
Based on intelligence assessments, the vessel was sailing along a known drug-trafficking route and was allegedly operated by an “organization listed as a terrorist organization,” Southcom said on the X social network. They added that no member of the US forces was injured in the operation.
The US military, on the orders of President Donald Trump, has been carrying out attacks on vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific suspected of smuggling drugs to the US since last September. According to the French news agency AFP, a total of at least 185 people were killed in these attacks.
The U.S. faces a major drug problem that authorities often attribute to foreign drug-smuggling networks. The Trump administration insists it is effectively at war with these narco-terrorists operating in Latin America. However, it has so far provided no evidence that the vessels it attacks are involved in drug trafficking.
Critics point out that US attacks on vessels in international waters constitute a violation of international law.
