Pepe Smit: And then
The first book for adults by Pépé Smit, And then, has the same qualities as her previous work: it is lively, idiosyncratic and very witty. Smit sparklingly describes a 1970s youth in The Hague and the Betuwe from the perspective of a child, probably the child she herself was. Almost stumbling over her words, out of sheer zest for life, the first-person narrator captures the world in words, the world that she thoroughly researches and explores day in and day out. Adults are allowed to do everything, so why are they sad so often?
