A thirty-year-old Icelandic man has sued his wife, a 23-year-old Russian, for a legal divorce. The policy says that they got married in April 2024 after a short relationship, but in July of the same year she moved to Russia without warning and thus ended their relationship.
In the policy, which was published in the Lögbirtingablaðin yesterday, it says that the man submitted a request for divorce to the Sheriff in the Capital Region last February 2026. All negotiations with the woman have turned out to be fruitless. Then she refused to appear before the Sheriff and thus refused to be involved in the case. The magistrate dismissed his request for a legal divorce in mid-March 2026.
The man was therefore forced to submit a request for an official exchange. By ruling, the Reykjavík District Court refused to grant his request for an official exchange where the parties are without property.
“The defendant’s legal address is unregistered. Her whereabouts are unknown and all attempts to contact her through other means, such as via telephone, e-mail and social media, have proved ineffective. Since it has not been possible to obtain information on where a summons may be published according to general rules, cf. point a, paragraph 1, article 89, of Act No. 91/1991 on the handling of civil cases, it is necessary to warn the plaintiff to take for the purpose of publishing this policy in the Official Gazette.”
