More than 30 million people will fall into poverty due to the consequences of the Iran war, including fuel and fertilizer supply disruptions. As reported “Armenpress”Alexander De Croo, head of the United Nations Development Program, told Reuters about this.
In particular, he noted that the shortage of fertilizers, aggravated by the blocking of cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz, has already reduced agricultural productivity.
According to his assessment, this will probably have a negative impact on the yield already at the end of this year.
“Food insecurity will peak in a few months, and little can be done about it,” Alexander De Croo said, listing other effects of the crisis, including energy shortages and reduced remittances.
“Even if the war ends tomorrow, the consequences are already evident, and they will push more than 30 million people back into poverty,” he said.
Reuters writes that earlier this month the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations World Food Program warned that the war would lead to an increase in food prices, which would worsen the situation of the world’s most vulnerable people.
