The new regulation of Miklošičeva upsets drivers
The new temporary arrangement of the Miklošič road, which gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists, upsets some drivers. They started collecting signatures with a petition in order to reopen part of the road for motorized traffic. Mayor Janković said that they are not planning any changes for now.
The Miklošič road is now partially closed to motor traffic. Namely, in the area next to Miklošič Park, the City Municipality of Ljubljana erected traffic barriers and painted the road with red floor markings. The space is now intended for pedestrians and cyclists, for whom benches and other social infrastructure have also been installed. They also placed several plants there, which were supposed to help green the space.
Some residents of Ljubljana have already expressed their disagreement with a petition, with which they want to return Miklošičeva to its original state. As a reddit user wrote, the new road is said to be opaque and dangerous, as people do not know where pedestrians should walk, where cyclists should be and where cars should line up. The arrangement is also said to be illogical, as “it looks as if the street is made up of random pieces of different projects”. Some are said to be dissatisfied with the implementation, which is only temporary and dysfunctional for cyclists, as it is said to be too narrow in some parts.
Difficult access to yards
Pedestrians should also have problems, as they should feel less safe due to the new arrangement. Most of all, the new arrangement of the road in the city center is expected to anger the residents of the surrounding streets, as they have difficulty accessing homes, yards and garages. “Miklošičeva cesta is an important urban link, so it should be arranged in a thoughtful, high-quality way and in dialogue with the local community. The MOL, however, introduced the changes without serious consultation with the people who actually live there and use this space every day,” they wrote in the petition initiative.
They are now demanding that the Municipality of Ljubljana (MOL) start listening to the residents and take into account their needs when arranging the space around their homes, and to stop further interventions in their current form. “I would prefer to see that there are no cars in the city center, but unfortunately that is not really possible. Miklošič’s road is wide enough to be arranged half for pedestrians and half for cars, and no one would disturb anyone,” wrote one of the supporters of the petition.
Priority for pedestrians and cyclists
Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković emphasized at the press conference that he sees no problems with the new temporary arrangement of Miklošičeva cesta. “The intention was to make access more difficult for cars and give preference to pedestrians and cyclists. Only one part of the park is closed now, and if anyone asks me, I’d be happy to have a bar there. I would like to ask if I can put tables on Miklošičeva cesta. There is already a speed limit there and it’s just an experiment. We give priority to pedestrians and cyclists and we will observe what happens for two years,” he said.
In addition to the changes right next to Miklošičev Park, floor paintings were also painted on the section from Trg OF to Pražakova Street. This part now represents the entrance to a gradual transition from a busy to a more peaceful public space. There is also an expansion of the area for pedestrians, along with the installation of urban furniture and the planting of greenery in the form of green islands. It is envisaged that such a temporary arrangement would remain on Miklošičeva cesta for at least two years, after which the MOL should make a decision on whether it makes sense to transform the street for a longer period of time.
