The Ministry explained, within the framework of the Elderly Care Initiative, that effective communication with hearing-impaired elderly depends on simplifying speech methods and using alternative means when needed, such as signing or writing in the event of significant hearing loss.
She stressed the need to be patient while talking to the elderly, pointing out that they may not be able to hear people entering the room, which may cause them to feel confused, so it is preferable to gently alert them before starting the conversation.
The Ministry advised reducing ambient noise while communicating, such as turning off the TV or radio, maintaining direct eye contact, speaking in a clear and understandable voice without shouting, using short, direct sentences and presenting one idea at a time.
She also stressed the importance of repeating the conversation calmly when necessary without showing distress, while ensuring that the elderly person understands what is being said, even if it requires repeating the question more than once.
The Ministry indicated health Residents need to monitor the use of hearing aids and ensure they work efficiently, while knowing how to adjust the volume and change the batteries regularly, to ensure the best possible benefit from them.
The Ministry called for providing a supportive environment for the elderly based on respect and appreciation, which contributes to improving their quality of life and enhancing their integration into society.
