After the comptroller Anel Flores broke into a stagecoach Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Officewhere auditors from the Comptroller General of the Republic were giving statements within a judicial investigation, attorney Luis Carlos Gómez requested a meeting of the Judicial Council to report what happened.
Sources from the Judicial Branch informed The Press that the meeting will be held this Friday, April 10 at 2:00 pm and that all members of the organization have been summoned, including the Attorney General of the Administration Grettel Villalazthe president of Maritza Cedeño National Bar Associationas civil society representative Carlos Leemagistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Attorney General of the Nation Luis Carlos Gomez.
The call came after the events recorded last Thursday at the headquarters of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, when a group of auditors from the Comptroller’s Office appeared to explain the findings of the audit to the former vice president. Jose Gabriel Carrizo.
What does the Judicial Council do?
The Judicial Council brings together authorities of the judicial system, representatives of the Attorney General’s Office, civil society and professional associations, and directly coordinates matters related to the administration of justice and judicial independence.
This body analyzes situations that may affect the autonomy of judges and prosecutors, guarantees that decisions and investigations are carried out with transparency, legality and respect for due process, and acts as a forum to evaluate possible excesses of authorities.
In cases such as the emergence of the comptroller in proceedings of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Judicial Council determines how to protect the institutionality and autonomy of the Public Ministry.
The Carrizo investigation
Carrizo is charged with the alleged commission of the crime of unjustified enrichment and at this time maintains a precautionary measure of house arrest and prevention of leaving the country.
The former vice president was arrested on January 27 at the Tocumen International Airport, coming from Guatemala. Subsequently, the guarantee judge Oris Medina charged him with alleged unjustified enrichment and ordered house arrest.
