Tells people on unapproved peptides to stop immediately

This was revealed in Brennslunn on FM957 this morning. There have been reports of increased use of illegal peptides and examples of people going to poison control centers after injecting themselves with illegal peptides. Gunnar says in Brennslunn that young people mostly ask about the use of peptides.

    Have multiple effects

“The body is very perfect and has all kinds of control systems and circuits where it assesses how much we need of each substance at any given time. And then all of a sudden if you inject something into the body, you are also bypassing the body’s defense system, which is the digestive system and the skin,” says Gunnar.

He says that this is how peptides can affect the body’s circulatory system. Unregistered peptides can cause the accumulation of substances and thus they can become pathogenic. It is of particular concern that young people look to peptides.

“Because this is the group that is sensitive, I’m not talking about teenagers who are growing and developing, everything is in full swing regarding these hormonal systems, the body is growing and changing, and it is especially sensitive to be putting some substances in the body that can affect it.”

Pay attention to messages on social media

“Those who are advertising this on social media, this is not charity, they are not giving this, they are selling this. If something is too good to be true, it probably isn’t true,” says Gunnar, who puts this in the context of buying stuff on the street. He encourages people to use common sense.

“And take good care of your body. We can damage and negatively affect the body with what we put in it, and I’m not talking about if we inject it.”

This has not yet been approved in Iceland, do you think it will be done?

“Just like with medicine and everything like that that is approved, it has to go through a needle’s eye of research,” says Gunnar. Medicines go through countless trials and most medicines are not approved.

“And haven’t been able to go through that whole process. And you’ve heard that many of these peptides have even been blocked in animal experiments. So you may not know all the negative consequences and they may take some time to manifest.”

    Takes time to recover

Gunnar says that drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic are peptides, peptides play a role in drugs and in the body’s balance and processes. The effect of peptides will be studied further.

“But like these peptides now that you buy on the black market, it’s just like if you were to buy some drug that hasn’t been studied. I think it should be approached that way, it’s not without risk and there’s a lot we don’t know about it.”

But it is known that there are some who have already started and are using this, what would you say to those who are on the one hand wondering about trying it and those who have on the other hand started using it?

“I would now say to the people who are thinking about using this: Why do you want to use this? There are other ways that are better than taking risks with chemicals that you are injecting into the body. If something is too good to be true, it is not true,” says Gunnar.

“And people who have started using this, it’s just best to stop as soon as possible. There are these processes and this balance in the body, it can go back, but the longer you use it, the longer it takes for the body to reach a balance. Our body is incredibly perfect and controls it with the eye of a needle and we don’t need to intervene in this. Not unless we’re already sick and then it’s best to see a doctor or the health system if you feel unwell.”
