Taiwan Embassy screens documentary ‘A Chip Odyssey’

The Republic of China (Taiwan) hosted a special screening of the documentary ‘A Chip Odyssey’ at the Russell’s Cinema in Kingstown on Thursday, July 16, 2026, offering government officials, educators, students, and invited guests an opportunity to explore the story behind Taiwan’s rise as a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced technology.

The screening formed part of Taiwan’s continued efforts to promote technological innovation, education, and international cooperation while highlighting the country’s journey from modest beginnings to becoming one of the world’s most influential producers of semiconductor chips. Directed by Hsiao Chu-Chen and produced by Ben Chen and Ben Tsiang, ‘A Chip Odyssey’ is a five-year documentary project that traces Taiwan’s transformation from humble beginnings to its emergence as a critical pillar of the digital world, a journey that began more than half a century ago. Drawing on the experiences and testimonies of individuals across multiple generations, the documentary features the voices of early contributors to Taiwan’s semiconductor industry alongside today’s professionals.

Through pioneering engineers, female production-line technicians, policymakers, scientists, and innovators, the film tells the story of how an entire island united behind a bold vision to determine its own future through science, technology, and industrial development. According to the the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, despite accounting for less than 0.02 per cent of the world’s land mass, Taiwan today produces semiconductor chips that power everything from smartphones and computers to medical equipment, vehicles, artificial intelligence technologies, and strategic defence systems, placing the island at the centre of the global technology race.
