29 people died in a traffic accident on the roads of Luxembourg in 2025. Statec reported this on Friday morning. This is a big increase compared to the year before: in 2024, only 18 people died in accidents.
Twelve fatalities in car accidents
The most common fatal accidents occurred with cars or vans. Twelve people lost their lives in this category, six more than in 2024. These figures also include the worst accident in Luxembourg in decades: on September 1, 2025, a car and a van collided on the N15 between Heiderscheid and Feulen, five people died. Meanwhile stands there a route radar.
Nine motorcyclists also lost their lives in traffic in 2025, the same figure as in 2024. However, the number of pedestrians who died in accidents has increased dramatically: eight pedestrians died in traffic last year. This is the highest value in years – and five more than in 2025.
Men are much more likely to be involved in accidents
In its report on Friday, the Luxembourg statistics authority also drew attention to a major statistical anomaly: men are significantly more likely to be involved in accidents than women. This trend applies to almost all cohorts, but is particularly pronounced in the age groups 25 to 34 and 35 to 44 years. Here men cause almost twice as many accidents as women.
Overall, the number of accidents remained stable compared to the previous year. In 2025, the authorities recorded 1,126 accidents, compared to 1,136 the year before. However, long-term development tells a different story. In a ten-year trend, the number of accidents has increased dramatically in some Luxembourg cantons. The canton of Mersch recorded 78 percent more accidents in the years 2023 to 2025 than in the years 2013 to 2015. In the cantons of Diekirch and Redingen there were 69 percent more accidents each, in Wiltz there were 67 percent more and in Remich 64 percent.
Alcohol problem
The problem of drunk driving is still present on the roads of Luxembourg: “In every fifth accident, one of the people involved was found to be under the influence of alcohol,” writes Statec. These statistics shift drastically the later it gets: in accidents at night – i.e. between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. – alcohol is involved in every second person involved. The peak value is reached between midnight and 1 a.m. In two thirds of the accidents that occur, at least one of the people involved drank alcohol.
Nevertheless, alcohol is only the number two cause of accidents, accounting for 19 percent. The biggest risk factor is driving too fast. Almost a quarter of accidents in 2025 occurred when a driver was speeding.
More and more injured children
A closer look at the updated Statec data tables on accidents reveals deeper negative developments: Last year, 1,469 people were injured in traffic accidents – more than in 25 years. The number of seriously injured people in 2025 was 335, the third highest since 2003, and the number of slightly injured people was the third highest in 30 years. For the past four years, more than 1,400 people have been injured in traffic accidents each year, a mark that has not been exceeded since 2000.
This increase is also reflected in the number of accidents involving injured children (under 15 years): there were 83 last year; since 2001, only 2012 (84) have more children been injured in traffic accidents. Ten years ago the number fell sharply – between 2016 and 2021, an average of 49 children were affected annually – but in the last four years it has been growing again: between 2022 and 2025, an average of 74 children were injured in traffic accidents.
This increase could be due to the electric scooters that have become fashionable in recent years. The number of accidents involving e-scooters has more than tripled in the past five years (from eleven to 38), and accidents involving motorbikes and bicycles have also increased, but to a lesser extent.
