It’s hot on Monday on rue de Strasbourg in the train station district. It’s 32 degrees in the shade and in the backyard where a 75-year-old died last Saturday. There is an open garage somewhat hidden away. Heaps of personal items are scattered on the floor. Adjacent stores use the backyard to receive deliveries. However, none of the residents can confirm whether the garage is a shelter for homeless people.
The rue de Strasbourg and other streets in the station district offer few shady spots. Depending on the position of the sun, the buildings offer protection from the sun. A homeless man, who has taken a seat further away under one of the rare trees, points to a nearby fountain when asked how he cools off. “I soak my shirt in water for half an hour, it helps.” Cold drinks given to him by passers-by would also cool him down. Otherwise the motto is: look for shade. He finds it especially in the parks.
