German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz’s statement that Montenegro is practically ready for admission to the European Union represents an important political message, and such assessments do not happen by chance, but are the result of dedicated reform work, institutional responsibility and a clear European orientation of the state, but also a more concrete political direction of the European Union in relation to the enlargement process.
This was announced by the Secretary General of the Parliament of Montenegro, Boban Stanišić.
“To be a part of the European family of nations in the near future, and today to be almost ready for reception according to the assessment of the most important European leaders, is a historic moment for Montenegro. It is a confirmation that our country in the European Union is increasingly spoken of in the language of trust, readiness and certain membership, and not only in the language of expectations and future obligations,” Stanišić said.
According to him, such messages are of great importance not only for Montenegrin institutions, but also for the European public, because they help the EU member states to understand more strongly that Montenegro is ready to be the next success story of enlargement.
“It is important that the European public is more and more aware that Montenegro is ready to become part of the European family. Such messages show that our country is increasingly seen as the next member of the EU, as a country that has welcomed the final stage of the European journey with readiness, responsibility and clear support from the most important European partners,” Stanišić said.
He emphasized that such evaluations do not happen by chance, but are the result of dedicated reform work, institutional responsibility and a clear European orientation of the state.
“In the Parliament of Montenegro, we work hard to fulfill the obligations that lie before us. Legislative activity, strengthening of democratic processes and a responsible attitude towards the European agenda represent our concrete contribution to ensuring that Montenegro enters the final negotiations ready and credible,” said Stanišić.
He added that the Assembly, apart from legislative work, also makes an important contribution through strong parliamentary diplomacy.
“In parallel with fulfilling our obligations in the Assembly, we conduct intensive parliamentary diplomacy, talk with partners from EU member states and clearly present Montenegro’s progress. Our task is to convey to European partners, as well as their citizens, the fact that Montenegro is a ready, reliable and credible future member of the European Union,” Stanišić pointed out.
He assessed that membership in the European Union is not only a formal political goal, but a process that should bring concrete benefits to citizens.
“For our citizens, the European path means a better quality of life, stronger institutions, greater legal certainty, better public services and more opportunities,” Stanišić concluded.
