The State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) said on April 23 that it arrested the head of a department of Kodori Hydropower Plants LLC , a subsidiary of Enguri HPP operating in the occupied Abkhazia territory, on suspicion of misappropriating and embezzling a large amount of money.
The individual, who the agency said “fully cooperated” with the investigation and “admitted to the committed crime,” faces seven to eleven years in prison.
“For those who believe they can misappropriate or embezzle state funds by using Georgia’s occupied territories: such crimes will not go unanswered, even if committed in the occupied territories,” the SSSG said.
The Enguri HPP, owned by Tbilisi, is situated along the occupation line, with the dam on Tbilisi-controlled territory and some of its critical infrastructure, including the turbines, on occupied territory. The facility is jointly operated by Tbilisi and Sokhumi.
