On Friday morning, a designated contingent of the Hungarian Defense Forces’ special operations forces departed for Morocco aboard a KC-390 transport aircraft to participate in the African Lion exercise.
African Lion 2026 is the largest annual joint exercise of the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM), taking place from April 20 to May 8, 2026, in Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia, with the participation of more than 40 countries.
Its goal is to strengthen the collective security capabilities of the United States, African nations, and global allies through a multi-component, multinational joint training event involving all branches of the military.
“I consider Hungarian participation in various international exercises held on the African continent, including African Lion, to be a priority, as it not only develops the operational and tactical capabilities of our domestic special operations forces, but also provides an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen forms of military cooperation between nations,” emphasized Lt. Gen. Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the Hungarian Defense Forces General Staff.
