Daraa, May 23 (SANA) Spain’s Special Envoy to Syria, Antonio González-Zavala, visited the ancient city of Bosra al-Sham on Saturday, touring key archaeological sites including the citadel and the Roman-era theater.
Zavala, who was accompanied by his family, told SANA the visit was aimed at exploring Bosra’s distinctive architectural and historical heritage, expressing admiration for the preservation of the ancient ruins.
Jihad al-Qwaider, director of tourism in Daraa who accompanied the delegation, described the visit as an important signal of international interest in Syria’s historical sites. He referred to Bosra as “the jewel of southern Syria” because of its archaeological significance.
Local officials said the visit could open the door for Spanish involvement in heritage protection and restoration projects, noting Spain’s experience in conserving archaeological sites damaged during the conflict.
Earlier on Saturday, Daraa Governor Anwar Taha al-Zoubi met with Zavala at the governorate headquarters to discuss local conditions and potential investment opportunities.
The visit comes a day after a Brazilian tourism and investment delegation toured Bosra’s historical landmarks and archaeological sites.
