KOTA KINABALU (June 6): The 50th anniversary of the Double Six Tragedy was marked with a solemn commemorative ceremony at the Double Six Memorial in Sembulan here this morning.
The ceremony began with Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun, representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, receiving a guard of honour from the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) ceremonial unit.
Guests then observed a one-minute silence in remembrance of those who perished in the 1976 air crash, before proceeding with the laying of wreaths.
The first wreath was laid by Malakun, followed by representatives of the families of the victims.
The memorial, erected in 1977 a year after the tragedy, stands in honour of the 11 individuals who lost their lives in the crash on June 6, 1976, including then-Chief Minister Tun Mohd Fuad Stephens.
Also among the victims were Minister for Local Government Datuk Peter Mojuntin; Minister of Communications and Works Datuk Chong Thien Vun; Finance Minister Datuk Salleh Sulong; and Assistant Minister to the Deputy Chief Minister Darius Binion.
Among those present at the ceremony were the children of Tun Mohd Fuad Stephens; Fauziah, Asgari and Faridah, accompanied by their spouses and families, and the children of Datuk Peter Mojuntin, including Moyog assemblyman Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin, as well as Kartina Sulong.
DBKK director-general Datuk Lifred Wong was also present, representing Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.
