The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) increased the level of warnings against high temperatures from first to second in the districts of Dunajská Streda, Komárno and Nové Zámky. The second degree is also expected to apply in the extreme northwest of the country on Friday afternoon. SHMÚ informed about it on its website. They are supposed to enter into force at 1:00 p.m. They are tentatively announced until 6:00 p.m.

In addition, the first level of warnings is also valid in several districts of the Bratislava, Banskobystrické, Trenčianske, Nitra and Trnava regions.
In the districts of Senica, Malacky and Skalica, Nové Zámky, Dunajská Streda and Komárno, where the second level of warning is to apply, expect temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius. “The high temperature represents a potential danger to human health, physical activities and the creation of fires,” the institute said. High temperatures will have to be expected over the weekend as well. The warnings should be extended to the whole of southern Slovakia.
It is not enough to just drink water. What do people underestimate during the heat?
During the heat, you should not underestimate protection from the sun or the drinking regime. The Public Health Office (ÚVZ) of the Slovak Republic warns that people should not be exposed to sunlight at the time when the sun is strongest, i.e. between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Cream with a UV filter, eye protection with sunglasses and headgear are also important.
“Summer clothes should be light, airy, with a looser fit, rather light colors and natural materials. Protect exposed parts of the body with a cosmetic product designed to protect against sunlight. Don’t forget your lips either, use balm with a UV filter,” experts advise.
They remind that the headgear should protect the neck and ears. When wearing sunglasses, make sure that the lenses actually contain UVA and UVB filters and that they are large and tight enough.
At the same time, ÚVZ warns that it is possible to burn yourself in water. “Before staying in the water for a long time, it is therefore advisable to apply a water-resistant protective cosmetic product,” he added.
During the heat, it is important to follow a regular drinking regime. You should drink in smaller doses, more often and before you feel thirsty. The basis is clean drinking water, sweetened drinks should be limited due to the excess of sugar and caffeine. It is ideal to drink water supplemented with minerals. Drinks should be lukewarm, not iced.
During the heat, it is recommended to drink at least two to four deciliters of fluids per ten kilograms of weight, which is approximately 1.5 to three liters of fluids per day. However, this amount increases in people who work physically and sweat more.
Risk groups include children, the elderly, pregnant women or chronically ill people, especially people with cardiovascular, respiratory or mental diseases or who are overweight.
“High external temperatures can cause overheating of the body and health complications – an increase in body temperature, malaise, drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting. Extreme cases are serious collapse states, which can lead, under certain conditions, to possible deaths of people, especially in risk groups,” warned ÚVZ.
According to the office, an important principle is consistent adherence to a regular drinking regime, even if you are not thirsty. You should also limit physical activity, stay out of direct sunlight and minimize your time outside.
The Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic added lighter meals, proper clothing, including headgear, sunglasses and the use of protective creams to the advice. Children and pets must not be left in direct sunlight or in parked cars.
Man collapsed? The first minutes are decisive, this is how you can help him
A person who has collapsed during the heat should be moved out of the sun, ideally into the nearest shade, and placed in a stable position. If the person is conscious, they should be placed in a lying position with their head supported, or in a semi-sitting position. This was reported by the City Police (MsP) Bratislava on the social network.
“Cool him down, for example by rubbing him with lukewarm water or fanning him. Give him small doses of (ideally) lukewarm unsweetened water,” the police recommend. If the patient’s condition does not gradually improve, it is necessary to seek medical help.
“If someone around you is not feeling well, offer them help or contact us via line 159. In case of confusion, unconsciousness or a serious deterioration in health, call the emergency medical service immediately at number 155,” explained the Minister of Health.
According to the police, warm weather can torment the body. The most at risk are seniors, small children, chronically ill people, but also people who work or move for a long time in direct sunlight. They advise to regularly replenish fluids, wear light airy clothes, avoid unnecessary physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day and don’t forget to wear a hat. “If you can, seek shade or air-conditioned areas,” city police said.
