The Siumut politicians in the Municipality of Qeqertalik demand political action to avoid the closure of Polar Seafood’s shrimp factory in Aasiaat and 116 employees losing their jobs, which will have major consequences for the local community.
The latest announcement from Naalakkersuisoq for Fiskeri Peter Borg about the shrimp factory in Aasiaat, which is threatened with closure, has been that Polar Seafoods and Royal Greenland should enter into dialogue. A dialogue that has not yielded results, Polar Seafod’s director Bent Salling could inform Sermitsiaq on Thursday.
Polar Seafood’s announcement has caused great concern among the local politicians in Qeqertalik Municipality, and the Siumut group is now demanding that action be taken from the political side.
Serious problem
– Siumut believes that such a serious problem must be politically involved as soon as possible. Therefore, we demand that the municipal council be called to an extraordinary meeting as soon as possible, write Paneeraq Sandgreen & Aqqa Samuelsen on behalf of Siumut’s political group in the municipal council.
The party is calling for action, and it cannot go too fast.
– The mayor of Municipality Qeqertalik is the citizens’ representative and must therefore prioritize this matter without further delay. If an extraordinary meeting is not held, citizens’ trust can be seriously weakened, the press release reads.
Peter Borg must act
The party believes that Peter Borg has not done enough by simply directing the two fishing giants to engage in dialogue and find a common solution.
– Fisheries Minister Peter Borg has stated that the two companies should discuss a joint solution. In Siumut’s view, this is not sufficient – action is needed now, state the Siumut politicians, referring to the fact that it is not only about jobs, but also about families, kindergartens, school children, other businesses and the city’s future.
