Siumut is unhappy that Naalakkersuisut has not extended the permit for exploration in Kuannersuit. – Regardless of whether there is uranium or not, Siumut agrees that our country must have raw material extraction, says the chairman, who also believes that Naalakkersuisut owes the population an explanation as to where new income will come from. The largest opposition party is also unhappy.

In Narsap Ilua, at Kuannersuit, Energy Transition Minerals’ mineral exploration permit, which expires at the end of 2025, has not been extended. The company’s application for an extension was rejected by Naalakkersuisut on Thursday 25 June.
Siumut’s chairman is not satisfied with that.
– Siumut has always fully supported the exploration permit in Kuannersuit, and we still do.
– I believe that with their rejection Naalakkersuisut opposes good conditions for investigations into our country’s possibilities in raw material extraction, says Aleqa Hammond to Sermitsiaq.
Siumut says yes
She clarifies how the party she leads stands on the issue of uranium:
– Regardless of whether there is uranium or not, Siumut agrees that our country should have raw material extraction.
– If you fear uranium, let’s negotiate an upper limit instead. Our country must take a step further. We need to stop constantly portraying ourselves as someone who can’t afford anything, says Aleqa Hammond.
In accordance with Siumut’s adopted objectives at the party’s national meeting, raw material extraction must be opened up, also when it contains uranium.
According to Siumut, Naalakkersuisut’s reasons for rejecting the application for extension of the exploration permit are not tenable. Therefore, they make a claim against Naalakkersuisut.
– If Naalakkersuisut wants to refuse, they should at least point out where society can get new income from, says Aleqa Hammond.
Sermitsiaq has contacted naalakkersuisoq for raw materials, Múte B. Egede (IA), for comment on Siumut’s criticism. However, Naalakkersuisoq has not yet returned at the time of writing.
Naleraq: Regrettably
The opposition party Naleraq is also disappointed by Naalakkersuisut’s decision.
– Naalakkersuisut has shown a lack of credibility.
– It is regrettable that Greenland risks being considered untrustworthy in terms of international trade opportunities, says chairman of Naleraq Pele Broberg to Sermitsiaq.
As long as Greenland is covered by Denmark’s constitution, the party does not believe that the time has come for resource extraction.
