This Sunday, July 12, the outgoing president Gustavo Petro ordered that no military establishment be used for the possession of Abelardo de la Espriella on August 7.
According to his statements, “the transmission of command to the new president is under the laws of the Republic and the Constitution.”
This is what Gustavo Petro said about the possession of Abelardo de la Espriella
The place to carry out this process became a new factor of clash between the outgoing government and the cabinet of the elected president. The intention to do so in a military garrison has become a topic of debate in recent weeks.
With just over a month until the event takes place, the vice president-elect, José Manuel Restrepo, had already provided details of the upcoming August 7. In his statement to Semana Magazine, he highlighted the symbolism of the location and the support it represents for armed institutions.
“It will be in a military garrison and it will be a demonstration, above all, very important, of recognition to the actors of the public force,” he stated a few days ago.
In that sense, Gustavo Petro has said that the Colombian system is clear that the possession must be made before Congress and that the main headquarters is in Bogotá.
“The law says which is the headquarters of the Congress of the Republic, where the laws of the people and not of the mafias or foreigners must be debated; laws are not made in the barracks, security actions are carried out to defend the people and their lives,” he said.
Faced with this, the political movement Defensores de la Patria asked the Congress Secretariat for clarity on whether it is possible to make a change of venue in the process.
