Schools across Dominica’s East and Northeast districts will remain closed on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, as authorities continue to respond to the impacts of severe weather over the weekend. The Ministry of Education announced that the closures are necessary to protect students and staff while recovery efforts are underway following heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides triggered by a trough system.
The affected institutions include Concord Primary, Atkinson Primary, Salybia Primary, Sineku Primary, Castle Bruce Primary, Lighthouse Christian Academy, Temple Seventh Day Adventist, San Sauveur Primary, Wesley Primary, Wills Strathmore Stevens (WS Stevens) Primary, Castle Bruce Secondary, and North East Comprehensive.
Officials explained that road access to several communities has been compromised, with landslides blocking major routes and floodwaters making travel unsafe. The Ministry of Public Works has deployed heavy equipment to clear debris, while emergency shelters have been activated in Atkinson, Castle Bruce, and the Kalinago Territory to support displaced residents. Utilities teams are also working to restore electricity and water services in the hardest-hit areas.
The National Emergency Planning Organization has mobilized resources to coordinate relief efforts, and assessments of agricultural damage are ongoing. Health services remain on alert, though no casualties or major injuries have been reported.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official updates as conditions remain unstable. The Ministry of Education stated that further announcements will be made once safety assessments confirm when schools can reopen.
