Another politically charged incident has accompanied the UEFA Champions League matches.
During the qualifying challenge between Larne FC and Crvena Zvezda, Serbian fans displayed the banner with the inscription “Kosovo is Serbia” in the stands, bringing back to the center of attention one of the most controversial messages in European football.
Footage from the stadium quickly spread on social media, prompting numerous reactions. It is not the first time that Crvena Zvezda fans use symbols or banners with political content during international matches, especially in UEFA competitions.
UEFA has rules prohibiting the display of political, ideological or provocative messages in stadiums, and similar cases in the past have led to investigations and disciplinary action against clubs or federations.
It remains to be seen whether UEFA’s disciplinary bodies will look into this case and whether measures will be taken against Crvena Zvezda for the behavior of its fans.
