The new model introduced in 2024 would be the source of the difficulties. Citizens fear they will no longer be able to drive regularly after moving to Italy.
SAN MARINO – Problems in converting San Marino driving licenses into Italian ones: this is the difficulty reported by some citizens on social media, where the concern of those waiting to complete the procedure is growing. At the center of the matter is the new driving license model introduced in San Marino in 2024. The Vehicle and Transport Registry Office (URAT) already knew that the documentation had already been sent to the Italian authorities, who would be responsible for disseminating it to the Civil Motorization offices in their territory. The problem could therefore concern the updating of Italian procedures, but there is a lack of official confirmation on the status of the process which should start from the competent Roman Ministry. What is certain is that some users complain on social media that they have sent several emails without getting definitive answers. The fear is that the delays could compromise the possibility of driving regularly in Italy, with consequences also for those who use the car for work. It remains to be clarified when the conversion will be regularly possible and what instructions are provided for waiting citizens.
Furthermore, the fear is that if the new post-2024 licenses are not yet recognized for the conversion procedures for San Marino residents in Italy, problems may arise in general for all San Marino people in the event of normal checks. However, there are currently no reports on this.
