Weather robbed Saint Lucia of a chance to compete for the Winlott Inc Windward Islands Under-19 Men’s Super50 Championship title, as their final two games were washed out. Despite an inferior run rate, hosts and defending champions Dominica played one more game and recaptured the trophy.
Joint top of the table after four rounds, Saint Lucia’s scheduled game against Dominica was abandoned due to a wet outfield on Friday, April 17, without a ball being bowled at the Geneva Playing Field. St Vincent & the Grenadines defeated Grenada by 60 runs at Benjamin Park to move to third in the standings.
More bad news came for Saint Lucia on Saturday, as their fixture against Grenada in Geneva also ended in a no-result. That left Saint Lucia stranded on eight points, while a 22-run win over SVG handed Dominica the tournament. Saint Lucia had a net run rate of 1.681 compared to 0.502 for Dominica.
The Saint Lucians will rue their loss to Grenada in the second round, which cost them a chance to win it all on the field despite the weather. Despite playing at least one innings fewer than anyone else, the Saint Lucians featured heavily among individual statistical leaders.
Fast bowler Nathaniel Joseph was the second leading wicket-taker, with 11 wickets, including a fivefer, a fourfer, and the tournament’s only hat-trick.
